NATURAL GAS SUPPLY IN COLOMBIA HAS GROWN 233% IN 2024

During the energy crisis in the interior of Colombia, thermal plants have been decisive in responding to the demands of the electrical system, compared to the impossibility that hydroelectric plants currently have due to the low levels of water reserves.

The same data from the report indicate that the maximum peak of daily consumption of natural gas, recorded as of April 20, was 614 Gbtud, which also translates into an increase of 188%, taking into account that, for the period equivalent of 2023, 325 Gbtud were recorded. In the face of the emergency, and with the understanding that the thermal plants have the supply of natural gas as their basis of operation, the company indicates that during this period it has operated at full capacity and in compliance with contractual obligations. The natural gas produced and imported for the generation plants located in the Caribbean region complement each other as sources for the

energy generation in the current contingency. “We have operated at full capacity to supply all the natural gas necessary for thermal generation, to support the firm energy commitments of the electricity sector and an availability of additional gas to increase thermal generation,” said Luz Stella Murgas, president of Naturgas.

A few weeks ago, the Government of Colombia, through the Ministry of Mines and Energy, reported that it was preparing two resolutions to guarantee thermal energy generation in the country and manage the export of energy to Ecuador, given the risk of shortages due to low reservoir levels and the panorama of water resources due to the El Niño Phenomenon. "As for special measures, we prepared two resolutions to guarantee the generation of thermal energy necessary to achieve a recovery path and another to manage our energy export to Ecuador," said Andrés Camacho, Head of the Portfolio. The aim is to establish transitional measures. for the supply of energy demand due to energy conditions during the

El Niño phenomenon. The articles published by the Ministry point out that: "The Ministry of Mines and Energy will periodically define, through Circular, a reference value for the minimum generation of the thermoelectric generation park, daily, to be programmed in the economic dispatch and the operation of the system ".
